Best Radon Testing & Mitigation in Edmonton

About Radon in Edmonton, Alberta

Last updated: March 2026

High radon is common in Edmonton homes. The city sits on glacial till and sedimentary deposits overlying uranium-bearing bedrock, and the 2024 Cross-Canada survey found that roughly one in six Edmonton homes exceeds the 200 Bq/m³ guideline. Edmonton's extreme winters, often the coldest of any major Canadian city, keep homes sealed for six or more months a year, allowing radon to accumulate to elevated concentrations. Testing is strongly recommended for all Edmonton homes, regardless of age, neighbourhood, or foundation type.

Typical Mitigation Cost in Alberta

$2,500–$4,000

Above national average

Higher costs reflect complex basement configurations and the need for multi-point systems in many Alberta homes.

  • •Foundation type: unfinished basement vs. slab-on-grade vs. crawlspace
  • •Number of suction points required (some Alberta homes need 2–3)
  • •Pipe routing through finished living spaces or garage
  • •Local labour rates in Calgary, Edmonton, and rural markets
  • •Seasonal demand: spring and fall are peak periods for mitigators

Frequently Asked Questions: Radon in Edmonton

About 16% of Edmonton-area homes, roughly 1 in 6, exceed the national guideline of 200 Bq/m³, according to the 2024 Cross-Canada survey. The city's combination of uranium-bearing geology, glacial soils, and cold winters that seal homes tightly creates conditions for elevated indoor radon accumulation.
Elevated radon has been documented across Edmonton, including in both established neighbourhoods and newer suburban areas such as Windermere, Terwillegar Towne, and communities in the southwest and southeast. Because radon depends on local soil and individual home construction, every Edmonton home should be tested regardless of neighbourhood.
Most Edmonton homeowners pay between $2,500 and $4,000 for a complete active sub-slab depressurization system. Homes with unfinished basements are generally at the lower end. Finished basements, multiple suction points, or complex pipe routing can push costs toward the higher end. Request quotes from at least two certified professionals before proceeding.
Radon testing is not legally required in Alberta real estate, but awareness in Edmonton is growing. Many buyers and home inspectors now recommend including radon testing as a condition of purchase, particularly given the city's well-documented radon risk. Electronic monitors can provide results within days; long-term alpha track tests take 91+ days.
Browse the listings above to find C-NRPP certified radon professionals serving Edmonton. C-NRPP certification is the national standard recognized by Health Canada and is the only credential that qualifies a professional for radon testing and mitigation in Canada.
Yes. Homes built to the 2020 National Building Code include a rough-in provision for a radon reduction system, but the active fan is not always installed. New construction in Edmonton is not immune to elevated radon, and testing your home within the first year is recommended even if it was built recently.
Health Canada's national guideline is 200 Bq/m³. Given Edmonton's elevated risk, even levels approaching 150–200 Bq/m³ are worth monitoring closely. Levels above 600 Bq/m³ require action within one year; levels between 200 and 600 Bq/m³ should be mitigated within two years.
A standard active sub-slab depressurization installation in an Edmonton home typically takes one full day. Finished basements, multiple suction points required by the home's sub-slab conditions, or complex pipe routing may extend the project to two days. Your contractor will assess the home before providing a timeline.
